About the Artist

Growing up in New York City, Carolyn May first studied painting at the High School of Music and Art. After graduating as an art major from Connecticut College, she moved to Boston.

She lived and worked in the Fort Point Channel area of South Boston when artists were first drawn to that warehouse district. Inspired by the views of rooftops and harbor, she painted a series of urban pictures exhibited at the Helen Shlien Gallery.

Later, a trip to the Southwest led to a group of landscapes dealing with color and pattern. More recent travels in Italy and rural France have resulted in smaller, more intimate paintings.

Perhaps her most personal work is the series of portraits of friends and family painted over the last thirty years. Recently these have come to include animal family and friends.

Her work has been shown in many group shows over the years, including at the De Cordova Museum, Boston City Hall and the Boston Cyclorama. Solo shows include at UMass Boston, UNH and the Helen Shlien Gallery. Her work is represented in private, corporate, and public collections.
